    Great American Risk Solutions (GARS) is currently searching for a Divisional VP of Underwriting focusing on casualty brokerage business. The position will report to the Divisional SVP of Underwriting within the GARS division. This position will have managers/officers as direct reports and will have input on organizational changes necessary to achieve business results. This position is located in our company headquarters in downtown Cincinnati, OH.


    • Establishes and executes the GARS Casualty Brokerage underwriting strategy and achieves the Underwriting Business Plan and related Objectives.
    • Highest underwriting authority level. Has expertise in, and ensures staff is able to interpret and explain, products, facilities, practices and services.
    • Responsible for developing and recommending GARS Underwriting's principles, practices and processes.
    • Oversees wholesale broker relationships and establishes key contacts with broker management and key individual brokers.
    • Develop strategic partnerships with Information Technology, Claims, Analytics, and Product Development to ensure successful service to GARS customers.
    • Reviews and approves opportunities for and may spearhead development of new business and / or programs.
    • Oversees the quality assurance processes including underwriting file reviews.  
    • Active participant in divisional visioning and problem solving.
    • Reviews and interprets competitive information. Decides on appropriate action based on competitive landscape.
    • Partners with divisional leadership to ensure appropriate and profitable underwriting; provides expert guidance and support for highest level underwriting decisions in support of divisional objectives.
    • Has accountability for performance, development and coaching of staff (hiring, firing, performance management, pay increases, etc.). Ensures the department has a sufficient number of trained staff to provide necessary levels of service and achieve department performance results.


    • 10+ years of commercial underwriting experience with a strong preference to the casualty and surplus lines. 
    • Bachelor’s degree; CPCU, ARM, AMIM, or ARE designations preferred.
    • Experience managing people is strongly preferred.
    • Strong presentation, communication, and negotiation skills.
    • Excellent relationship building skills are required.
