    Great American’s Professional Liability Division offers non-medical service providers protection from claims alleging an act, error or omission by the firm, its staff or contractors working on its behalf. The Division recognizes every industry has its own unique needs and develops customized coverage solutions for specific professional liability exposures.​​

     

    The Professional Liability Division is currently searching for an Underwriter Trainee for our New York City office.  The person hired for this position will learn to underwrite, service, and develop accounts and be responsible for business production, risk selection, pricing, retention and profitability within the scope of authority and business objectives.  

     

    Responsibilities

    • Responsible for performing, coordinating and leading the day-to-day activities of employees performing policy administration tasks:
      • Prioritizes daily workload and delegates assignments in a manner to ensure accurate and timely completion.
      • Reviews completed assignments.
      • Provides training and technical advice to lower level positions.
      • Ensures accuracy, timeliness and quality of work and recommends improvements to processes and procedures.
    • Performs a variety of policy administration tasks in support of the business.
    • Utilizes computerized systems for research, tracking, information gathering and / or troubleshooting (i.e., Excel / Word programs, legacy systems, internal systems, third party vendor delivered systems, etc.).
    • Shares and / or conveys complex information via telephone, e-mail, fax, regular mail or in person to underwriters, agents, brokers, reinsurers and / or insureds maintaining a professional demeanor in all situations.
    • Participates in other departmental processes / projects, such as changes / enhancements to forms and screens, user acceptance testing for systems and policies, and reviewing impact to current policies / practices.
    • Acts as a liaison with other departments and facilitate interdepartmental communication.
    • Develops relationships with agents & brokers through telephone interactions.
    • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of department policies and procedures and utilizes in-depth understanding of the business (including products, coverage, etc.) and organization. Participates in ensuring compliance and complies with company and regulatory guidelines.
    • Learns underwriting system and maintains current information within the system. Monitors accounts on an ongoing basis.
    • Prepares effective internal and external communications on underwriting issues.
    • As appropriate for line of business, may approve new business, renewal business and / or endorsements based on a defined set of instructions / guidelines.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Finance, Liberal Arts or related discipline.
    • Strong verbal, analytical and organizational skills.  
    • Must be able to professionally interact with agents and brokers.
    • Customer service oriented, and able to use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
    • High level of organizational skills, ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
    • Proficiency in PC based programs and Microsoft Office.
