The products offered by the Ocean Marine Division of Great American Insurance Group help America's marine businesses stay afloat!  We have been protecting American businesses since 1872; from small family-owned companies to Fortune 500 corporations. The major product lines we underwrite within the Ocean Marine Division include, Protection and Indemnity (P&I), Marine Liabilities inclusive of MGL, Marina Operators Legal Liability, Ship Repairers Liability, Commercial Hull, (Primary and Excess), Boat Dealers and Marinas, Ocean Cargo, Vessel Pollution, and non-marine classes to supplement these.


The Ocean Marine Division is currently searching for an experienced General Liability Claim Specialist who will work from the Divisional office located in lower Manhattan.  The person hired for this position will handle medium to heavy liability claims, in addition to first party contractor’s equipment and hull claims as needed.  This position is responsible for performing coverage, liability and damage investigations of Marine claims and resolving claims within prescribed authority level.  Experience with Building and Personal Property claims and accompanying forms is a plus.



  • Verifies policy coverage as applicable to the specific loss.
  • Investigates claims to determine coverage liability and damages.
  • Obtains recorded and/or signed statements.
  • Secures police reports and conducts investigations. 
  • Verifies and evaluates damages, while properly managing expense.       
  • Effectively partners with coverage and defense counsel.
  • Attends mediations.
  • Identifies third party contribution. Able to instruct, monitor and work with outside adjusters and vendors.  
  • Maintains timely, professional notes documenting claim activity.
  • Communicates loss prevention information to appropriate underwriting personnel.
  • Sets appropriates reserves within authority and makes recommendations for reserves in excess of personal authority.
  • Travels as needed, including some overnight and air travel. 
  • May assist with supervision and training of less experienced claims personnel.
  • Identifies specific reinsurance treaties, when applicable.
  • Performs other duties as needed


  • Bachelor's degree and 3-10 years claims experience, with a focus on CGL or comparable corresponding experience.
  • Must be willing to learn marine claims.  Must be able to read, understand and interpret coverage and contracts. 
  • Must know the litigation process.  Must have strong skills in customer service, computers, verbal and written communications.
  • Exceptional time management and organization skills.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 20% of the time, including some overnight and air travel.
  • Strong computer knowledge.
