The Environmental Division of the Great American Insurance Group provides a comprehensive portfolio of environmental insurance products to a broad array of industries.  All products can be customized to address the specific risks and exposures of the client.  The VP of Environmental Claims will report directly to the President of the Environmental division and will manage the claims function within the Environmental division.


  • Responsible for activities and services of the department, ensuring an efficient level of administration and that company standards and customer relationships are maintained.
  • Investigates and maintains larger, more complex claims.
  • Work with assigned adjuster to review and determine coverage and / or liability.
  • Secures / analyzes necessary information (i.e., reports, policies, appraisals, releases, statements, records or other documents) in the investigation of claims.
  • Ensures that claims handling is conducted in compliance with applicable statues, regulations and other legal requirements, and that all applicable company procedures and policies are followed.
  • Works toward the resolution of claims files, complaints and disputes and attends arbitrations, mediations, dispositions or trials as necessary. May affect settlements / reserves within prescribed limits and submit recommendations to Corporate Claims on cases exceeding personal authority. Ensures that claims payments are issued in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensures that department or functional area meets policies and procedures.
  • May provide input to establishing policies and procedures. Aligns business unit with business objectives.
  • Work with and communicates regularly with the Corporate Claims department.
  • May establish reserves and make recommendations or reports for Corporate Claims or Senior Management.
  • Responsible for performance, development and coaching of staff (i.e., hiring, firing, performance management, salary increases, etc.). Provides training to new members of the team / unit. Work with Senior Management and HO regarding any personnel issues or performance concerns.
  • Provides tactical leadership and strategic direction to the unit. Advises reporting staff on claim files and extends settlement authority as necessary after reviewing files.
  • Provides input and actively participates in divisional management meetings, training sessions, collaboration meetings, etc. Be available to the group as a resource in areas of expertise.
  • Plans and ensures that the unit meets budget and performance targets. Completes and monitors file compliance using the eTAPs and other internal auditing and tracking systems.
  • Achieves satisfactory grades for internal and external audits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • J.D is required and must be licensed in at least one state.
  • Must have at least 15 years of claims experience, including 5 or more years in management. Environmental claims experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills as well as the ability to partner with senior management is required.
  • Must have significant problem solving experience.
