The Professional Liability Division of Great American Insurance Company is currently recruiting a Western Regional Underwriting Manager to join our team. This position may be based anywhere in the Western Region of the United States.


Ideal Locations:

Los Angeles, Orange, CA; San Diego, CA; San Francisco, CA; Denver, CO; Seattle, WA; and the Greater Phoenix area, Arizona.


  • Responsible for the delivery of services of the Underwriting, Marketing, Customer Service, Operations and / or Claims areas to support achieving production, service and profit goals for the department.
  • Has accountability for the risk selection / rejection, pricing, retention, growth and profitability (per divisional objectives) decisions made by members of the team / unit.
  • Analyzes quality and quantity of risks underwritten and prepares reports to communicate this information.
  • Administers, applies and may update underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations.
  • As appropriate for line of business:
    • Has accountability for the risk selection / rejection, pricing, retention, growth and profitability (per divisional objectives) decisions made by members of the team / unit.
    • Empowers employees to use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
    • Ensures a high level of customer service.
    • Oversees analysis of coverage and limit requests and decisions for what terms to offer.
    • Ensures business is priced in accordance with company guidelines.
    • Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
    • Ensures that appropriate reports are available, accessed and appropriately used for rating and underwriting processes.
  • Ensures that effective business relationships with internal and external customers / coworkers are developed and maintained in order to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Has responsibility for developing productive territories
  • Provides tactical leadership and strategic direction to the division.


  • A bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting is preferred.
  • Must have 10+ years of industry experience in Miscellaneous Professional Liability.
  • A RPLU and/or CPCU certification is preferred.
  • Ability to build relationships and expand territories.
  • Excellent financial statement analysis, valuation analysis and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication & marketing skills
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new business-related software
